The only knock I have on the SSL-1s is that the bass, although tight, was not as tight as with the 69s. I perceive this to be due to the SSLs having more midrange because of the more coil winds and Duncan's artificial aging (weakening) of the magnetic pull of the polepieces. Jul 24, 2010 For the money a decent alternative to the Seymour Duncan SSL-1/SSL-5s might be the GFS Premium Texas Stagger Alnicos. That's what I put in my 'Gilmour-ish' black Strat. I've been quite pleased with the tone, and you can buy the whole set of 3 for about what one Seymour Duncan retails for.
